Kozhikode (Calicut)

Kozhikode also known as Calicut, is a beautiful city in the state of Kerala in southern India on the Malabar Coast  between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea. Surrounded by the Arabian Sea on the West, and mesmeric peaks of the Wayanad hills on the east, Kozhikode is well known for its beautiful landscape, immaculate beaches, fragrant spice gardens and scenic country sides.

The Samoothiri became powerful among the Kings of Kerala due to the flourishing international trade. The name Calicut, is thought to have originated from Calico, the hand woven cloth, which originated here.

The best places to get a sight into its history and natural beauty are the Beypore Fort and Kappad Beach where Vasco da Gama set foot for the first time when he came to India on May 27, 1498.
