Jaisalmer, the ‘Golden City’ is one of the most famous cities in the royal state of Rajasthan, India. It is situated in the middle of the great Thar Desert.  It has neighboring Pakistan on its western side. On its south, there is the beautiful city of Bikaner. The eastern part is bordered by Jodhpur. The yellow sand and the sandstone used to make the structures in the city give it golden yellow appearance.


Jaisalmer was named after its founder, Rao Jaisal who ruled Jaisalmer during the 12th century. Jaisalmer never came under the direct ruling of the Islamic sultanate due to its unique geographical position

Jaisalmer is also famous for its beautiful forts. Jaisalmer Fort is situated on Trikuta Hil. It was built in 1156 by the Bhati Rajput ruler Jaisal. It is inhabited even now and about a quarter of the population of the city live in the fort premises.

Gadsisar Lake is the water conservation tank and built by king Maharwal Gadsi Singh in the 14th century., Patwon-ki-Haveli and Nathmalji-ki-Haveli, Jain Temples, Shantinath Temple, Chandraprabhu Temple and the Shitalnath Temple are other attractions of the city. Tourists visiting Jaisalmer also see Jaisalmer Folklore Museum, Bada Bagh, Mool Sagar, Gopa Chowk, Tazia Tower, Khuri Sand Dunes, Sam Sand Dunes, and Kuldhara.

Jaisalmer is famous for Rajasthani folk music and dance forms which are highly appreciated in the global forum. The annual desert fair that takes place in the city attracts tourists from all over the world. It is a vivacious carnival of vibrancy and colors that features camel shows and enthralling rides and promises an experience of a lifetime.

The nearest airport to Jaisalmer is Jodhpur airport which is situated at a distance of around 275 kilometers. Well connected with domestic and international flights to and from major destinations.

Jaisalmer by Railways

Jaisalmer is connected with various cities through broad gauge and meter gauge railway tracks. There are direct trains from the cities of Delhi and Jaipur to Jaisalmer. The ‘Palace on Wheels’ also connects Jaisalmer.

Jaisalmer by road

Jaisalmer has good road connectivity with various cities of Rajasthan and Gujarat. Several state transport and private buses ply on the routes between these cities. The Golden Bus Terminal and Roadways main bus stand are the two main bus stands in Jaisalmer.
