You’re experiencing the pain of an infected tooth but are unable to get to the dentist right away.

These natural remedies to treat tooth infection may help ease inflammation, infection, and that terrible pain.

1.Garlic for toothache

One of the most effective and widely known home remedies for toothache is garlic. Garlic can help treat infection and reduce pain and inflammation.

A clove of garlic should be crushed and placed onto the affected tooth. Left in place for as long as you can stand the flavor. The mild burning sensation the crushed garlic causes in your mouth.

2.Onion for toothache

Onion contains antibacterial properties. Chewing on a raw onion for a little as three minutes. It is usually sufficient to kill all of the germs in the mouth, decreasing the pain caused by an infection in the tooth. Place a small amount of onion directly on the aching tooth or gum for relief of pain.

3.Bay Berry

Making a paste of the bark of bay berry combined with vinegar. Applying it to your sore tooth. It will relieve the pain of a toothache.

4.Clove Oil for toothache

Clove oil helps prevent and treat infection due to its antibacterial properties. It is also known to reduce pain.

Cloves are a tried and true natural remedy for tooth pain. Take the cloves directly from the spice cabinet and place them in between the cheek and the infected tooth.

Leave the cloves in place for half an hour or until the pain eases. You can also purchase a bottle of clove oil from any health food store.

Mix the essential oil with a few drops of vitamin E, which will act as a dilutant, and place the mixture on the infected tooth using a cotton swab.

5.Ice on Toothache

Ice packs placed on the outside of your cheek on the affected side of the mouth. It can reduce the pain and swelling of an infected tooth.

6.Salt Water

Rinsing with warm salt water can be very helpful for toothache. Just make a solution mixing 2-3 tablespoons of salt in a glass of lukewarm water. Gargle several times a day.

This not only helps soothe the pain of the toothache but will help flush away any trapped pieces of food that have become lodged in or around the tooth. Do not use cold or very warm water, as this may make your tooth hurt more.


Elevating your head will decrease the pressure in the area of the infected tooth and thereby reduce pain and inflammation. If your toothache is worse at night, as is often the case, try sleeping upright in a chair or propped up on pillows.

7. Massage

If the pain is caused by wisdom teeth attempting to break through the skin, massaging the area with your finger can often bring some relief from the pain.

It should be noted, however, that if the pain is caused by infection, rubbing the affected area can increase the irritation and pain.

8.Acupressure for toothache

Acupressure is an excellent natural way to self-treat a wide variety of health conditions. For the pain of a toothache, press the L1 point of the hand corresponding to the side the toothache is on.

Press the webbed space between your index finger and thumb. Close to the bone at the base of the index finger. Squeeze with as much pressure as you can stand for 15 – 60 seconds several times per day or until relief is felt. 

9.Baking Soda Gargle 

Put two tablespoons baking soda into a four-ounce glass of warm water and gargle with it. Then hold it in your mouth for 45 seconds. Do this until the mixture is gone.

The trick to making this natural toothache remedy work is to be sure the water is as warm as tolerable, almost hot.

This remedy provides temporary relief by neutralizing the acid eating away at the tooth. Mealtime can be especially painful. It may be helpful to brush with baking soda in between meals to immediately remove food particles and relieve pain.

10.Vanilla Extract

Another natural remedy for toothache is vanilla extract. Take it directly out of the bottle and swish it around in your mouth, concentrating on the infected tooth. 

Note: If you have a gluten intolerance or allergy, take care to get gluten-free vanilla extract so you don’t add stomach pain to the tooth pain.

11.Charcoal Compress

Activated charcoal is natural, inexpensive, and can be picked up at any health food store. Open a few caplets and shake out the charcoal into a shallow bowl.

Add a few drops of water to make a paste and apply it to a piece of gauze. Gently bite down on the gauze with the infected tooth. Let the paste squish around in your mouth. You should feel relief within ten minutes.

12.Epsom Salt Swish

Using Epsom salt will draw out the infection, ease swelling and inflammation, and deliver a strong dose of magnesium to the body. It will help promote relaxation.

Fill a four-ounce glass with very warm water and add a tablespoon of Epsom salt. Swish it around in your mouth for 30 seconds to a minute ignoring the terrible taste.

Do this until the mixture is gone.

13.Take Your Vitamins & Minerals

When the body is suffering from any type of infection. It’s important to give it the support it needs. Supplement your diet with 500 mg of vitamin C and 200-300 milligrams of magnesium to fight infection and inflammation. 

Note: If you suffer heart or kidney problems, consult a healthcare provider before adding a magnesium supplement.
