How to Get Rid of Chest Congestion

At a minimum, keep a humidifier running while you are sleeping. If you can, keep one running all day long in whatever room you are in.


A good gargle is one of the best remedies for chest congestion. It can break up the mucus that causes congestion and get rid of the inflammation that worsens congestion.

  1. Stir 1 teaspoon of salt into 1 cup of warm water until it dissolves.
  2. Tip your head back, pour the water in, and gargle for at least 30 seconds.
  3. Spit the water out as soon as you are done. Do not swallow it.
  4. Repeat as often as desired.

3.Onions and Honey

Onions and honey are both great home remedies for chest congestion, so combining them makes perfect sense. This remedy needs to sit overnight, so use one of our other remedies while you wait for this one to be ready.

  1. Peel and slice an onion into medium-sized chunks.
  2. Cover the onion with a good amount of honey. Let the onion mixture sit overnight.
  3. In the morning, dismiss the onion from the honey.
  4. Use a strainer if you want to get the honey off of the onion.
  5. Take 1 teaspoon of the honey immediately.
  6. Take 1 teaspoon of honey 3 more times during the day.
  7. Repeat until your chest congestion is gone.

4.Lemon Tea

Lemons are naturally cleansing, so they make the perfect home remedy for chest congestion caused by an infection. Additionally, this remedy soothes the throat, particularly when you have a bad cough.

  1. Boil 1 cup of water.
  2. Add half of a lemon rind to the water.
  3. Steep for 10 minutes.
  4. Remove the lemon rind.
  5. Add 1 tablespoon of honey.
  6. Drink immediately and repeat as desired.


This black licorice-flavored vegetable has a very strong taste, but it is excellent for clearing up congestion. Preparing fennel this way mellows the flavors a bit, making it one of the tastier home remedies for chest congestion.

  1. Add 1 tablespoon of butter or olive oil to a pan.
  2. Heat the oil or butter until warm.
  3. Slice fennel into small pieces.
  4. Toss the fennel with curry powder or cayenne pepper.
  5. Add the fennel to the oil or butter.
  6. Cook until the fennel becomes soft, stirring occasionally.
  7. Eat immediately.

6.Parsley Tea

Parsley is one of the best home remedies for chest congestion. It is a very powerful herb, and you can enjoy its benefits. 

Using it as a seasoning, eating it plain, or brewing it into a tea. Those who do not enjoy the taste of raw parsley can use this tea recipe.

  1. Put 1 tablespoon of fresh parsley into the bottom of a cup.
  2. Boil 1 cup of water and pour over the parsley.
  3. Let the mixture steep for 5 to 10 minutes.
  4. Strain the parsley out of the tea. Add 1 tablespoon of honey.
  5. Drink immediately and repeat as desired.
